Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame
The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame is located in Springfield, Massachusetts, at Exit 6 off of I-91.
Dr. James Naismith invented the game of basketball. An educator in Springfield, Massachusetts, he was handed the task of creating an indoor game to get school children through the cold, snowy New England winters. In the space of two-weeks, he successfully combined a game of finesse and accuracy and applied a list of 13 rules and basketball was born.
Today, basketball is a game played by more than 300 million people. Dr. James Naismith was thrilled to witness basketball become an Olympic sport at the 1936 Olympic games held in Berlin, Germany. Dr. Naismith’s invention did not bring him fame or fortune, so for his historic creation, The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame bears his name as the world’s only tribute to him for the game of basketball.
The Basketball Hall of Fame is a popular stop for class trips. They have programs in place that offer teachers and students “an opportunity to explore the relationship between healthy character development, mature decision-making and academic achievement”.
A visit to the Basketball Hall of Fame can include stopping for lunch or a snack at Max’s Tavern, Pazzo Ristorante or a sweet treat at Cold Stone Creamery!
No trip is complete without a visit to the Hall of Fame Gift Shop where one can get all things basketball!
