Smith College Museum of Art is among one of the more important collections of art at an American liberal arts college. It holds approximately 25,000 works of art, concentrating on 19th- and early 20th-century art. Established in 1879, Smith’s holdings have served as both a teaching tool and scholarly resource. More than 45,000 visitors tour the museum each year.
This impressive collection includes works by internationally known artists of the 19th century; Degas, Monet, Seurat, Renoir, Gauguin, and Cézanne and from the 20th-century: Picasso, Gris and Kirchner. More than 8,000 prints, 1,600 drawings and 5,700 photographic prints adorn the walls with collections growing in ancient art, decorative arts and Asian art.
