Westover ARB is home to more than 2,700 military and civilian personnel and to the Air Force’s largest cargo aircraft, the C-5 Galaxy. The 439th Airlift Wing is the host wing and provides worldwide air movement of troops, supplies, equipment and medical patients. The wing’s flying unit, the 337th Airlift Squadron, operates the C-5 which specializes in transporting outsized and oversized cargo that no other aircraft can carry.
There are also over 2,500 reservists assigned to the wing at Westover who train one weekend / month and serve a 15-day annual tour of duty each year.
Westover ARB’s personnel frequently support worldwide humanitarian missions from disaster relief to providing food to refugees. Some recent missions include:
- Pakistan earthquake relief (2005)
- Hurricane Katrina and Rita relief (2005)
- Tsunami disaster relief (2005)
- Iran earthquake (2003)
- World Trade Center recovery (2001)
- Mozambique flood relief (2000)
Support of war-related missions includes Operation Iraqi Freedom (2003-present), Operation Enduring Freedom (2001-present), and Operation Noble Eagle (2001-present).
